Dungeon mobs give far less XP in Forever, but dungeon quests pay much more

In short
  • XP from dungeon monsters is way down
  • Dungeon quests give "much, much, much higher" XP
  • The overall XP curve to 60 hasn't changed
  • Every raid boss gets a rare, very strong chase item
  • Tier pieces drop across 10-, 20- and 40-player raids

Running the same dungeon over and over won't be the fast way to level in WoW Forever. Principal Designer Kris Zierhut told The Sun at BlizzCon that experience from dungeon monsters has been brought way down, while experience from dungeon quests is now "much, much, much higher." Warcraft Tavern and Wowhead reported the interview.

The idea is that your first run through a dungeon, quests included, pays off in experience and loot, and repeat runs aren't worth it for leveling. Blizzard would rather have people out in the world meeting each other. The experience curve itself is unchanged: the Riverglades and Shen'dralas sit where leveling slows down, and Mount Hyjal slows it further near 60.

Loot at 60 is meant to last. Zierhut and Senior Encounter Designer Michael Nuthals said every raid boss will have a chase drop with a low drop chance but "very, very strong" power, on the level of Dragonspine Trophy from The Burning Crusade, so older raids stay worth running.

Raids come in 10-, 20- and 40-player sizes, and tier pieces can come from all three. Blizzard is also slowing down how fast gear progresses.

One question Warcraft Tavern raises: if repeat runs don't help with leveling, finding groups for older dungeons could get harder later on. Blizzard hasn't addressed that yet.
